Vintage Home Gets Custom-Color Roof
KANSAS CITY, KAN. - Homeowners Carol and Ray Knoff knew exactly what they wanted when they decided to replace the roof on their 111-year-old Queen Anne style home. They had previously found a 300-year-old roof tile from a historic home in Des Moines, and they wanted to replicate the red to gray roof coloring. Plus, the color needed to perfectly match their home's brick patio.
"We knew we'd need a top-quality roofing manufacturer to custom create the color for the slate tiles on our home so we started to research options," says Carol Knoff. "All of our investigative work brought us to DaVinci Roofscapes®. So, we loaded up the car with pavement samples and traveled from our home in Vinton, Iowa to their facility in Kansas City, Kansas to see if they could create what we needed."
The Knoffs were not disappointed. "The DaVinci team was as excited as we were about the challenge of custom creating the color for our roof," says Knoff. "They worked with us to develop a color combination of Midnight Gray and Cottage Red that really 'pops' and gives a positive first impression of our home while helping define the roof lines and architectural style."
During a renovation in the 1990s the previous owners of the Knoff home installed black asphalt shingles on the roof, which didn't complement the home's style. Recent storm damage prompted the homeowners to take the leap to re-roof the house and investigate custom color options.
For the complex, multi-pitch roof areas of their home, the Knoffs selected Bellaforté Slate polymer tiles. The tiles feature a patented fastening system for precise installation and superior wind performance. The 12-inch slate Bellaforté roofing tiles, which are backed by a 50-year limited warranty, have achieved some of the strictest testing ratings in the country, including the Miami Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA) and Florida Building Code (FBC) qualifications.
A portion of the Knoff's historical home features a three-story tower with a music and sitting room on the top floor, capped with an old-fashioned turret. DaVinci Multi-Width Slate was installed on the cone-shaped portion of the roof to both accent the turret and complement the single-width Bellaforté Slate used on the majority of the home.
“The combination of the Bellaforté Slate and the Multi-Width Slate fit the aesthetic needs of this home and perfectly unified the roof," says Crystal Smith, project specialist for DaVinci Roofscapes. "From just four dimensions provided to us by the Knoffs, the DaVinci team was able to customize a Turret Package that unites the overall look of the home."
Keenly interested in selecting the ideal roof for their home, the Knoffs made several trips to the DaVinci manufacturing facility in Kansas City. "These homeowners first visited our plant to learn about the manufacturing process and then made a second trip to make certain the roofing color blend we developed exactly fit their vision," says Smith. "They were extremely excited to be in the factory when their perfect color came off the line."
"The product testing and manufacturing processes were very impressive at DaVinci," says Knoff. "Their customer service was also outstanding and we developed a great confidence in the team there.
"It's wonderful to now have this new custom color polymer slate tile on our roof. Our home features many design elements that make it unique, and the roofing is now the icing on the cake. The bold custom colors created by DaVinci give the house a unified look that complements the detail work of the house trim, siding and stone pathways."
