Captain George’s Seafood Restaurant

Despite its coastal location and the potential for severe weather anytime throughout the year, the owners of the new Captain George’s Seafood Restaurant in Kill Devil Hills aren’t worried. The 12,100-square-foot building on the Outer Banks of North Carolina is protected by an impact-resistant roof from DaVinci Roofscapes®. Tested to withstand hurricane-force weather conditions, the synthetic roofing tiles also resist fire, rot, moisture and insects.

“We sleep better at night knowing that the roof on this restaurant was a smart investment to protect our business,” says Sherry Pitsilides, co-owner of Captain George’s Seafood Restaurant. “With the unpredictable weather we see on the coast, we wanted to make sure to have a roof that would safeguard our guests, employees and business if conditions got bad. The 50-year warranty on the product brings us peace-of-mind and a good night’s sleep at the end of a busy day.”

Architect Insights

When design architect Wayne Anderson, AIA, and project architect Jonathan Rau, AIA, of Covington Hendrix Anderson Architects took on the design and product specifications for the restaurant, they knew synthetic materials would be the best choice for the roof. “This building is about 1,000 yards from the oceanfront and we wanted a maintenance-free roof that would withstand the environmental aspects for years and years,” says Rau. “From my experience, there are also savings of cost and installation time when installing synthetic roofs, so that makes it a ‘win-win’ product choice.

“There are two distinct reasons why we selected the DaVinci roofing tiles for this product over all other companies. First, the variations within the color of the Mountain Blend tile that DaVinci offers is so much more realistic looking than the competition. The three shades of dark brown in the roofing tiles blend in perfectly with the environment and look completely natural.

“Second, the depth of the shakes for DaVinci was a positive factor because the shadow line is more realistic. These two key items made a positive impression on us and the owners, and have resulted in an exceptionally good-looking roof.”

Installer Insights

When the 400-seat, buffet-style restaurant opened in mid-2009, roofing installer Rex Simpson was one of the first guests in line. “We’re proud of the work our team did installing the 150 squares of DaVinci Mountain Blend Shake roof on this building,” says Simpson, general manager of Gallop Roofing & Remodeling in Wanchese, N.C. “These shakes completely replicate wood shakes, but without the negative aspects that real wood shakes bring to a job.”

Founded in 1952, Gallop Roofing added in remodeling services and changed its name in 1990 when Rex and Vicki Simpson took over the company. “You can’t just throw anything up a roof and hope it will work — especially not in coastal areas,” says Simpson. “I believe this roof will work perfectly because of its anticipated long life span, low maintenance needs for the restaurant owners and the product testing results. This DaVinci roof is Class 4 impact rated, Class A rated for fire retardance and tested for high wind endurance. It’s darned hard to beat those qualifications in a roof!”
