From the Architect’s Corner – Replacing Old Shakes (Before & After)
When talking to architects about the products they are going to recommend to their clients, most of the time our conversation veers towards what the client’s current roof has on it. More often than not, if somebody is looking at our synthetic shake shingles, they already have cedar shake (or a product made to look like cedar shakes) on the roof and it is time for a replacement. Sometimes a certain roofing material just works for the home’s style, and you need to find something that pretty much matches what is currently installed.
Towards the end of their useful life, a cedar shake roof not only looks shabby, but is more susceptible to wind or hail damage, which can lead to leaking and other problems. A polymer shake roof by DaVinci will resist deterioration over time and comes with a 50-year warranty. The material style and color didn’t change much, but the new tiles clearly spruce up the overall look of the roof.
