Homeowner Recycles Synthetic Roof Tiles
KANSAS CITY, KAN. – Bill Lowell is doing his part to help the environment. He’s currently renovating his Minnesota home with a recycled blue jean product for sound insulation, a geo-thermal closed loop heating/cooling system, a grey-water system using recycled water to flush toilets and a DaVinci synthetic slate roof.
“The original house had asphalt shingles and we wanted them gone,” says homeowner Bill Lowell. “Since we’re expanding the house dramatically, a new roof was required for everything to match.
“One key reason we selected the synthetic roof is because it creates ‘cleaner’ runoff water for our new cistern that will be used to water our gardens. The DaVinci roof has inorganic pigments permanently bound into the polymer tiles, so rainwater runoff will not carry trace chemicals or granules. We wanted pure rainwater, not water that would contain toxins that leach from the roof surface.”
Another important factor for Lowell in deciding on a synthetic roof was DaVinci’s recycling program. “We did a great deal of research on all the products for our home and were impressed with DaVinci’s waste recycling program and the 50-year warranty,” says Lowell. “Plus, another ‘green’ aspect of the roof is that it required less material for the overall support and installation than would have been required for a real slate roof.
“When the roof was completed, it was an easy process to fill and return 10 boxes of the left-over shingles and cuttings. We’re really pleased that the roof product is 100 percent recyclable and that our scrap product is being repurposed into starter tiles by DaVinci to extend its lifespan.”
Recycling Program
The DaVinci job site waste recycling program provides free shipping back to the company for all projects within 500 miles of the company’s Kansas City manufacturing facility. The program assures that roofing contractors and homeowners have a safe, reliable way to recycle remaining synthetic tiles and pieces from a project.
