KANSAS CITY, KAN. – When the five-star St. Regis Hotel and Residences opened in Atlanta in 2009, the property became an instant landmark. With 151 guest rooms and 53 permanent residences, the expansive facility was critically acclaimed as the ideal design statement to complement its prestigious Buckhead setting.
Rabun Rasche Rector Reece Architects (based in Atlanta) took extra care in specifying a roof that would fit in with the residential Buckhead location. After much consideration, Midland Engineering Company was commissioned to install a dark green synthetic slate tile roof from DaVinci Roofscapes®. The authentic slate tiles rise high above the 26-story structure and unite the project with lower roofs on the hotel’s spa area, entryway and restaurant.
“The mansard roof at the top of the building and the large roofs on the separate three-story wings surrounding the pool area are now landmarks on the Buckhead skyline,” says Ken Sage, vice president business development with Midland Engineering Co. out of South Bend, Ind. “The green color seems to flow into the nearby trees. These roofing shingles are so authentic and replicate real slate so accurately that they look as if they’ve been in place for decades.”
For the Midland Engineering team, the challenge of installing roofing tiles 26 stories in the sky was met head-on. “The architects requested that we fasten each shingle with two stainless steel screws in lieu of standard nails,” says Sage. “That took pneumatic nailers out of the equation and made installation more challenging. Using screw guns at 300 feet in the air on an 18/12 pitch roof system was a new experience for us.”
According to Sage, his company is seeing a growing trend toward the use of “faux” slate systems. “We’ve had requests for synthetic roofing products on everything from residential homes to retail projects,” says Sage. “Because of the warranty, the product durability, consistency in tile colors and the bundled blend system, we try to steer our private clients toward DaVinci products.”
After the main sections of roof were installed at the St. Regis, the project architects decided to add another restaurant prior to the hotel’s opening. Again they turned to DaVinci roofing products.
“We got the call in early 2009 that the St. Regis wanted to add a small one-story addition to the front of its property to house the Paces 99 American Bistro restaurant to the right of the main entrance,” says Todd Spencer, president/architect at Spencer Roofing & Construction, Inc. in Kennesaw, Ga. “The goal was for the roof addition to complement the roof on the main section of this prestigious hotel. This immediately led us back to the DaVinci products that Midland Engineering had affixed to the main structure.
“We installed 15 squares of 12-inch DaVinci Dark Green authentic slate tiles in a mansard application on this restaurant roof. The match is perfect. When the doors opened to the hotel in April of 2009 the roof for every part of the building looked perfect.”
