Choosing the Right Roof Color
For National Curb Appeal Month, I am sharing my time-tested method for picking the perfect colors. The FRESH approach has five factors to consider when choosing a color for the roof or any part of your exterior. Your house’s fixed features are the first and most important to consider. Fixed features are the elements that do not often, if ever, change. They include architectural elements such as brickwork, stones, and colored window grids. When these primary features work with your roof color, you create a cohesive exterior scheme that exudes curb appeal.
Viewing Samples is a Must
Begin by getting ideas and inspiration for colors to harmonize with your fixed features. DaVinci provides many resources. Images of the color blends, an online gallery, and the color visualizer assist you in finding colors that fit the vision you have for your home.
However, to ensure maximum curb appeal, you must select your final color by looking at actual samples. View roofing tiles or paint colors in the exact location and under the same lighting conditions as when on your house.
Easy Access to Samples
I have always emphasized the importance of looking at samples; today, more customers understand the value, too. A nationwide homeowner “2021 Roof Purchasing Study” conducted by Signet Research Inc. for DaVinci Roofscapes reports that requesting samples is the service they are most likely to use from a manufacturer’s website.

Evaluating Your Color Samples
Once your samples arrive, to decide which color you like best, start by looking at pieces of each blend outside of your house:
- Start by looking at examples of each color alongside the fixed features first and then beside other parts of your home.
- Stand back about 15-20 feet and determine the most appealing color.
- Then to get an even better idea of how that color blend will look on your roof, have your contractor place samples along your roofline so you can get a view from the same angle you’ll see it once installed.
