California Dreaming … Select Shake Ideal for West Coast Homes
Roofs in southern California take a beating. Strong winds. A rainy season. Salt air and sea spray. Even abundant sunshine can damage a roof. That’s why, when homeowner Jerry Cochran decided it was time for a new roof, he did his research.
From talking with his roofer, Absolut Roofing, and digging into online research, Cochran decided to invest in Select Shake composite roofing.
“This roof has everything going for it,” says Cochran, a resident of Los Alamitos, California. “It’s the best looking roofing material I found in the marketplace.”
With a corner lot located less than seven miles from the ocean, Cochran was very particular about the roofing material added to his home.
“I want a beautiful roof to improve the curb appeal of my home. At the same time, I’m looking for durability … a roof that will not leak during our rainy season.”
Selecting Select Shake
Created with the authentic look of real cedar shake taken from natural wood profiles, the multi-width DaVinci Select Shake tiles resemble a traditional cedar shake look.
The authentic cedar shake appearance comes with every 22-inch long and 5/8-inch thick Select Shake that DaVinci makes. Tiles are available in eight- and 10-inch widths. To provide a more realistic look, the 10-inch wide pieces have a simulated keyway to give the appearance of four and six-inch width shakes placed together.
DaVinci Select Shake product line comes in eight color blends, including Autumn, Chesapeake, Mountain, Tahoe and Weathered Gray. The additional three color blends come from the Nature Crafted Collection and include Aged Cedar, Black Oak and Mossy Cedar.
As with all DaVinci composite roofing materials, Select Shake is Class A fire rated and Class 4 impact rated. In addition, the product resists fading, curling, cracking and cupping. Similarly, the synthetic shakes resist the elements west coast homes would endure. Including, salt air and sea spray, rotting and insects, plus algae and moss growth.

“For this house, the Select Shake in the Aged Cedar color adds a feeling of shake charm. However, the Cochrans will have far less long-term maintenance than if they added real cedar shake shingles.”
Hammarstrom adds that this is the first Select Shake her company has installed. “We’re going to keep recommending this product,” says Hammarstrom. “The new roof on the Cochran home looks 100 times better than the old one. The Select Shake adds value to the overall home.”
