KANSAS CITY, KAN. – For residents of the 166 town homes at The Shires of Inverness, it’s sometimes a challenge to gain a consensus on improvements or to make a change in architectural features. That’s because the Illinois community includes seven individual homeowner associations plus a master homeowner board of directors. However, in a united move, the master board gave one of the town home associations (containing 32 individual town homes and 11 buildings) approval to replace their current wood shake roof with DaVinci Shake synthetic roofing tiles.
“The original buildings throughout the community were all constructed at different times and have wood shake roofs,” says John Anderko, a member of the master board and president of town home association #4. “We like the look, but not the lifespan or upkeep hassles of the real wood shakes.
“Construction on this phase of the community started in 1985. The original wood shake shingles wore out over time. Our research showed that replacing with wood simply wasn’t smart — the wood just doesn’t last as long as we wanted. After that determination, we spent a great deal of time investigating alternative roofing options and decided that synthetic shake roofing tiles had all the qualities we were seeking.”
A priority for the homeowners was selecting a product that would match the weathered look of the existing wood shakes throughout the entire complex while offering easier maintenance and a longer lifespan. “We reviewed bids from a dozen companies and really liked the DaVinci Shake roofing tiles offered in the Mountain Blend coloring that A. B. Edward Enterprises recommended,” says Anderko. “We’re more than half way done with the renovation work now and can’t say enough good things about the product and the installer. With a 50-year product warranty and testing data that shows the tiles are fire retardant and impact resistant, we believe we’ve made the best decision possible for our community.”
The Shires of Inverness is the largest DaVinci synthetic shake re-roofing project in the Midwest, according to Bogdan Mikuta, president/owner of A. B. Edward Enterprises, Inc. The project could get larger in the coming years with the possibility that more of the associations will be re-roofed with DaVinci Shake tiles as their original wood shake roofing wears out.
“The style of these town homes is unique for our area with the heavy use of shake roofing to complement the brick and cedar siding,” says Mikuta. “It’s a wonderfully ‘earthy’ look that is now accented perfectly by the DaVinci synthetic shake roofing tiles with their authentic profiles and deep shadow lines. These products have superior color fade resistance, are embedded with state-of-the-art UV stabilizers and require minimal upkeep. This allows the residents here to enjoy their lifestyle more and worry less about the roofs overhead!”
