Composite Shake Siding Ideal for Creekside Homes

After housing families for more than three decades, the exterior of Creekside Homes apartments looked bad. The original real cedar shake shingles from the 1980s were in terrible condition. To solve the problem, the new owners of Creekside Homes are moving ahead with a full exterior renovation. They are starting with Hand-Split Shake Siding from DaVinci Roofscapes.

Original Findings

When the new owners purchased the property in April of 2019, they took a close look at Creekside Homes. They discovered the Mill Valley, California apartment complex had many rotting cedar shingles. In some cases, there was bare tarpaper exposed to the elements on the top and sides of the structures.

After opening up the first building, the owners saw major defects in the old roofing systems. Therefore, they decided to replace all the exterior surfaces including siding, roofs, railing systems and decks.

Low-Maintenance Alternative

Creekside Homes is not your typical “big box” apartment structure. There are 9 separate buildings that house 24 units. Three buildings contain 4 units each. The other 6 buildings each hold 2 units. Each of the 24 units has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths.

That’s not the only unusual aspect of the apartment complex. The unique design calls for angled picture windows along with mansard roofing.

As discussion got underway on what building products to use, the owners consulted with a local architect on the renovation project. It was recommended they consider DaVinci composite products. Why? Because the architect believes the lifespan, appearance and warranty on the composite tiles will be ideal to serve as siding for the buildings.

With about 40% of the Creekside Homes project now finished, installation has been delayed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. According to the owners, residents are eager to have the project completed.

Those structures that have been refurbished are being met with positive reviews. Several residents report that the Black Oak composite siding color appears very authentic. It reminds them of a dark, aged cedar that has endured lots of weather over the years.

Fortunately, the Black Oak Hand-Split Cedar Shake Siding will retain that same natural look for decades to come. Thus, the apartment building exteriors will need little upkeep.

Composite Siding Options

The almost black bark coloring on the authentic-looking shake siding at Creekside Homes is just one of several siding colors available from DaVinci. Along with the Black Oak color, there’s also Aged Cedar and Mossy Cedar, part of the company’s Nature Crafted Collection. Five other colors are also available: Bark, Granite, Sage, Slate Blue and Taupe.

Made to withstand extreme weather conditions on the roof, DaVinci Hand-Split Shake Siding tiles are ideal for exterior walls. Manufactured from virgin resins, UV and thermal stabilizers plus a highly-specialized fire retardant, the siding resists expansion and contraction that comes with changing weather conditions and temperatures.

The maintenance-free composite shake siding is made with color throughout each piece. It requires no painting. And, the tiles are recyclable. They serve as an environmentally-friendly alternative to real wood shakes and plastic siding.
